An incredible 13 Premier League titles, plus many other pieces of silverware saw Old Trafford earn the unofficial title of The Theatre of Dreams.
But it’s coming up to NINE years since Manchester United lifted the iconic trophy and they’re not even in the title conversation this season.
Qualifying for next season’s Champions League is in doubt too as Man United let yet another lead slip as they played out a 1-1 draw at home to Southampton.
talkSPORT’s Sam Matterface quipped: “Old Trafford is fast becoming the theatre of broken dreams.”
Many Man United fans would would agree with Matterface’s comment, as well as talkSPORT presenter and Man United supporter Hugh Woozencroft’s stunning rant after the final whistle blew.
Woozencroft added: “It’s awards season at the moment. The nominees: The NeverEnding Story, Groundhog Day, The Muppets…
“They think they’re Hollywood, more like Hollyoaks!
“There will not be any acceptance speech here any time soon and the fans inside Old Trafford know it as they boo their team off the pitch and it’s not for the first time.
“All the problems that we’ve seen before once again play out. A Manchester United side who start brightly, concede an equaliser and then lose complete control of the game.”
It was Hollywood football from Man United in the first half as Jadon Sancho’s close-range finish following a swift counter-attack put them ahead.
The hosts could’ve had more goals but had to settle for a 1-0 lead at half-time and just three minutes into the second half, all that good work was undone as Che Adams’ neat finish put Saints level.
The rest of the second half saw a return of the turgid football that Man United fans are reluctantly and gradually becoming accustomed to in recent years.
However, the draw also revealed a relatively new problem of starting matches well before blowing a lead.
Their 1-1 draw at Burnley was identical, as was their draw at Aston Villa, which saw Ralf Rangnick’s men go 2-0 up with 67 minutes on the clock, and their inability to close out a match also cost them their place in the FA Cup.
And Rangnick admits this problem is something that’s becoming all-too familiar for his side.
Asked if the draw was like their previous outings, Rangnick told talkSPORT: “Yes, very much the same.
“Very good first-half, outstandingly good first half-hour, the team did all the things we told them to do. We had four or five massive opportunities to score but were only able to take one of them.
“At half-time it was clear that we have to be compact, we have to be disciplined in our positions, don’t allow them any transitional moments, but after two minutes exactly that happened quite like at Burnley.”
Failure to combat this problem will not only make Old Trafford a theatre of broken dreams, but a living nightmare.
