Five of Super Sundays most explosive arguments as Keane and Carragher clash

ROY KEANE and Jamie Carragher went head to head in one of Super Sunday’s most explosive on-air arguments on Sunday.

The pair yelled at each other across the studio after Manchester United’s 1-1 draw at Chelsea and SunSport has explored where it ranks in the top five most heated clashes ever on Sky Sports.

There have been some classic encounters over the years with fiery former players making for excellent viewing.

Graeme Souness, Gary Neville, Keane and Carragher took no prisoners during their playing days and have taken such passion into their punditry careers.

And even milder-mannered stars such as Micah Richards and Jamie Redknapp have been dragged into furious debates in the past.

Here SunSport looks back at the big five.

KEANE vs CARRAGHER

The most recent and perhaps the most furious…

Manchester United legend Keane and ex-Liverpool centre-back Carragher locked horns over Michael Carrick’s decision to bench Cristiano Ronaldo for the Red Devils’ 1-1 draw at Chelsea.

Keane was left open-mouthed by the decision and raged at Carragher after he suggested the Portuguese was best left out due to his lack of effort in defence.

And after Carragher appeared to scoff at the suggestion Ronaldo should be picked because he has scored important goals since his Old Trafford return, the Irishman exploded.

He raged: “What’s the game about?! You’re talking about [Mo] Salah… the game’s about goals Jamie!”

KEANE vs REDKNAPP

Keane is never afraid to get involved in a back-and-forth with any of his fellow pundits.

Richards appears to have brought out a lighter side in the seven-time Premier League winner.

But the same cannot also be said for Redknapp.

The pair had a furious disagreement in February over the talent of Tottenham’s squad.

Redknapp refuted the suggestion Harry Kane and Son Heung-min were the North Londoners’ only top quality players.

But Keane was dismissive of Redknapp’s argument that Spurs’ squad is full of internationals and blasted: “Playing for your country doesn’t make you a good player.

“If you can trap the ball these days you can play for your country!”

SOUNESS vs RICHARDS

The Sky favourites had a heated row over Souness’ favourite subject… Paul Pogba of course.

It came during a discussion on old comments made by Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola about the Frenchman’s future at Man Utd.

The pair spoke over each other and gesticulated furiously as they tried to make their points – while Souness even turned his back at one point.

Richards suggested Raiola had made comments without Pogba’s say-so but ex-Liverpool man Souness was having none of it.

He blasted: “Not a chance, not a chance. He’s echoing the thoughts of the player.”

KEANE V KLOPP

Now this was not technically a Super Sunday encounter but it is still a corker.

Keane features again as is often the case with frosty exchanges on Sky Sports.

And this time he clashed with Liverpool boss Jugen Klopp on Monday Night Football.

After suggesting the Merseysiders were sloppy in spells during a 3-1 win over Arsenal in 2020, Klopp hit back.

The German said: “Did Mr Keane say we had a sloppy performance tonight?

“He must have been watching a different game. Nothing was sloppy. This game was exceptional.

“The football we played was absolutely exceptional.”

But moving swiftly to clarify his words, Keane responded: “I said there were sloppy moments.

“But I think you have been outstanding, I’ve been giving the club nothing but praise.

“I’m not sure you’ve heard me correctly.”

After Klopp walked back to the dressing room, Keane quipped: “Jesus. very sensitive, imagine if he’d lost.”

NEVILLE vs SOUNESS

These two are never backward in coming forward and that showed once again last month as they had a bitter disagreement over what is wrong at Man Utd.

Neville argued Ronaldo needed a focal point up front with him in attack, namely Edinson Cavani.

But Souness insisted the main concern is at the other end of the pitch, as stats showed United had kept just one clean sheet in their most recent 20 matches, conceding 31 goals.

Neville said: “The biggest problem United actually have pre-dates Ronaldo. And for me it’s not a Pogba issue either.”

Souness interjected: “You had to throw him into the mix as well.”

But Neville carried on: “We can point towards two players, no goals is a mentality issue in a club, it’s a mentality issue in general.

“United have had just one clean sheet in the last 20 game across all competitions.

“They’ve conceded 31 goals to Chelsea’s 12, Liverpool’s 16 and Manchester City’s 21.”

But Souness cut in again and added: “That’s not about having a focal point. That’s not the issue.

“The issue is you’re too vulnerable.”

Neville attempted to diffuse the rising tensions and said: “We’re talking about two different things here, Graeme.”

But Liverpool legend Souness would not stop. He continued: “It’s not about having a focal point. That’s not the issue.”

Sky Sports presenter Dave Jones as well as studio guests Carragher and Jermain Defoe sat back and enjoyed the fireworks show.

Neville then almost lost his cool at the two Anfield icons, calling the giggling Carra and Souness ‘these two jokers’.
