Manchester United players all celebrated with David de Gea for his display in the win over West Ham.
Lisandro Martinez jumped on his goalkeeper’s back followed by Diogo Dalot, with Casemiro and captain Harry Maguire joining in.
It was their way of saying thank you for helping the club seal three points thanks to a number of late saves.
As well as tipping Michail Antonio’s fizzing effort over the bar, he also denied Kurt Zouma’s header from point-blank range to keep the Red Devils in front.
With De Gea missing out on a spot in Spain’s preliminary 55-man squad for the World Cup he could be forgiven for licking his wounds, but his performance was full of fight.
“I think it was Zouma’s header, I don’t know how he saved it and then one from Declan [Rice] at the end there.
“David’s a top goalkeeper and he creates top moments like that. It’s obviously a nervous moment when they’re putting balls into the box with corners, set pieces, throw-ins. It’s tough but it feels good when you come through it.”
Speaking after his performance, De Gea said: “To be honest I feel a bit tired. I think that sometimes people think that goalies never get tired but we were suffering at the end, I don’t think I made a save until the last 15-20 minutes at the end.
“I think that we controlled the game but at the end it was very tough. They’re a good team and they put players in front.
“It’s a massive win for us if we want to achieve and be in those top places we need to win games like today.”
Responding to praise for his display, De Gea said: “I think that the whole team [deserves credit], not just the defenders.
“We are pressing well and recovering the ball high in the opponent’s half so that is massive for us to be defending well.
“Of course we conceded some chances at the end but we played against West Ham who are a great team with good players and I’m very happy to be honest.”
De Gea’s performance earned plenty of plaudits, including those of pundit Scott Minto who hailed the Spaniard along with the rest of United’s defensive line.
He told talkSPORT: “It was incredible, what a game of football.
“I think we saw a different side to Manchester United, certainly in the second half where they’ve had to hang on to win all three points.
“I don’t think we’ve seen that in this great run that they’ve been on, particularly in the Premier League.
“Those two saves from David de Gea. He’s had his critics and rightly so over the last couple of seasons along with a lot of the players, but he was a standout.
“Harry Maguire had an excellent game, but Martinez, what a player, what a signing and Diego Dalot had an unbelievable performance and Casemiro in that midfield area, they’re then standout players for me and what a massive three points that is for Manchester United.”
