John Stones wants to see Raheem Sterling win the Euro 2020 Player of the Tournament award.
With just one goal in his final 16 games for Man City last season, there were calls for Jack Grealish to start ahead of Sterling at this summer’s Euros.
But the 26-year-old winger has proved his doubters wrong with three goals in six games and he will look to add to that tally in Sunday’s final against Italy on Sunday.
Speaking to talkSPORT’s James Savundra about Sterling’s impact for England, Stones said: “I’m a big fan of Raheem. I’d love to see him get Player of the Tournament.
“What he’s done for us, the unselfish part of his game kind of goes unspoken about. As players, we see it.
“He’s been a great threat going forward with how direct he’s been in the games.
“It’s been great playing with him and I’m sure he’ll be giving everything on Sunday.
“Hopefully he can get another goal and we’ll see where it takes us.”
Meanwhile, Stones has hailed Gareth Southgate’s impact on this England team during his five years in charge.
He said: “Gareth’s created an unbelievable culture within our squad.
“There’s an unbelievable togetherness and calmness that is his unique quality as a person and manager.
“He’s got great staff around him. He’s put together an incredible squad with a lot of great characters.
“One of his best characteristics is his calmness under pressure, his willingness to win and that shines through.
“When you’ve got a leader, a manager that’s got that quality, it passes through the team really quickly and you soon jump on board. It’s special to have.”
England vs Italy in the Euro 2020 final is LIVE on talkSPORT this Sunday. We will bring you all the build-up, expert analysis, the latest teams news and interviews from the Three Lions camp, plus exclusive commentary from Wembley.
