It’s testament to how incredible Manchester City are playing that Kevin De Bruyne’s stop-start 2021/22 campaign is barely being talked about.
Injury and a loss of form has made it a season to forget so far on a personal level for the brilliant Belgian, who’s been the team’s main creator of goalscoring opportunities since joining the club in 2015.
But getting goals haven’t been a problem for Pep Guardiola’s men, who went top of the Premier League after a resounding win at Watford.
City were dominant from start to finish of the 3-1 win and it’s not an exaggeration to say they could’ve got to double figures had they had their shooting boots on – Jack Grealish going close on six separate occasions.
Bernardo Silva, City’s man of the moment, was very ruthless when he had his opportunities, netting a brace including a delightful curling effort into the top corner.
The two goals took his tally to the season to seven, already equalling his efforts from last term, which was a very quiet one by his standards.
It was reported the former Monaco man was going to be used as a makeweight in the deal for City’s pursuit of Harry Kane in the summer. That certainly wouldn’t be on the table now with Silva earning all kinds of praise this season.
Jack Wilshere labelled him a better player than Cristiano Ronaldo on current form, however, Pep Guardiola went a step further by saying there’s no one better than Silva in the Premier League.
“He is the best,” Guardiola said when talking about Silva’s goal against Aston Villa on Wednesday night.
“He was the best two or three seasons ago,” Guardiola continued. “He was the best then too. He has a special ability to do whatever he wants with the ball. Against a good goalkeeper it was an incredible finish.
On Guardiola’s comments, Silva’s teammate Ederson told talkSPORT: “Of course, I agree. I’m with Bernardo every day, I have known him for a long time, since our time at Benfica.
“I know his skills, how good he is and how good he has become. He is a very important player for us, he has an amazing talent.
“He is good at keeping the ball, his touch. I only have praises for him because he is an incredible player. Any manager would love to have a player like him in the squad.”
But City superfan Liam Gallagher went one step further than Guardiola and Ederson, declaring on Saturday: “Bernardo Silva. Best player in the f****** world.”
