Salah on brink of joining elite club and equalling Arsenal legend’s goal record

Mohamed Salah is just two goals away from joining the Premier League ‘100 club’.

The Liverpool forward faces Burnley, live on talkSPORT, this weekend and a double would actually make him the fourth fastest to score a century of goals in England’s top flight.

It took Arsenal legend Thierry Henry 160 games, with Salah on 98 goals in 159 Premier League appearances.

It’s a remarkable feat for the Egyptian, who has been a phenomenon since arriving at the club in 2017.

And Premier League legend Darren Bent, who himself is a member of the ‘100 club’ with 106 strikes, reckons the 29-year-old is underrated by fans around the country.

“I rate him very highly,” the former Tottenham striker told Drive on Thursday. “You look at his numbers since he’s been here – 32 (goals) in 2017/18), 22, 19 and 22.

“He’s two off the hundred club in five seasons – do you know how fast that is?

“What he has done at Liverpool Football Club is sensational. His numbers are insane. He got 31 goals in all competitions last season!”

Since joining Liverpool, Salah has become one of the top-flight’s most prolific goalscorers and he proved pivotal in the club’s Premier League title success in 2020.

His value at Liverpool cannot be underestimated with several incredible performances in his time at Anfield.

In his debut campaign he broke the record for most goals in a 38-game season with 32, while in one match against Watford that season he found the net four times.

Last season, in what was an extremely testing campaign for manager Jurgen Klopp and his side, he scored 22 goals and ensured Champions League football for Liverpool.

The Egyptian also recently broke another league record by becoming the first player in history to score in their first five opening day matches.

Such is his contribution to the club, talks are ongoing with the hierarchy to ensure he extends his stay in Liverpool beyond 2023.

If Salah does score twice against Burnley he will join a list with some of the greatest players in Premier League history.

Quickest Premier League stars to 100 goals

  1. Alan Shearer – 124 games
  2. Harry Kane – 141 games
  3. Sergio Aguero – 147 games
  4. Thierry Henry – 160 games
  5. Ian Wright – 173 games
  6. Robbie Fowler – 175 games
  7. Les Ferdinand – 178 games
  8. Michael Owen and Andy Cole – 185 games

Salah, though, can’t claim the record outright with Newcastle legend Alan Shearer, Tottenham ace Harry Kane, and ex-Man City star Sergio Aguero ahead of him.

After their victory away at Norwich last Saturday, Liverpool will play in front of a full Anfield for the first time since March 11, 2019 when they lost in the Champions League to Atletico Madrid.

It promises to be an incredible atmosphere on Merseyside as supporters look to help them improve the home form which derailed their bid to retain the title last season.

Liverpool vs Burnley kicks off GameDay on talkSPORT with live coverage from Anfield at 12.30pm.
