Visa and Mastercard are investigating their business relationship with Pornhub after claims that the website shows videos of rape and underage sex.

The allegations come from New York Times opinion columnist Nicholas Kristof, who wrote on Friday that the pornographic website contains rape scenes, revenge porn and other explicit videos taken without the consent of participants.

Mr Kristof wrote: “The issue is not pornography but rape.

“Let’s agree that promoting assaults on children or on anyone without consent is unconscionable.”

Pornhub said the allegations that it allows images of the sexual abuse of children were “irresponsible and flagrantly untrue”.

It said moderators are employed to assess material and that anything illegal is removed, adding: “Pornhub is unequivocally committed to combating CSAM (child sexual abuse material), and has instituted an industry-leading trust and safety policy to identify and eradicate illegal material from our community.”

But online payment service PayPal stopped processing payments to the website last year and Mr Kristof’s column called for others to do the same.

Visa responded: “We are aware of the allegations, and we are actively engaging with the relevant financial institutions to investigate, in addition to engaging directly with the site’s parent company, MindGeek.”

The payments giant said that if Pornhub was breaking the law or bank policies, it will be prohibited from accepting Visa payments.

Mastercard said it would take “immediate action” if the claims were proved.

“We are investigating the allegations raised in the New York Times and are working with MindGeek’s bank to understand this situation,” the company said.

“When we identify illegal activity, our policy is to ask the acquirer to terminate the relationship, unless an effective compliance plan is put in place.”

American Express said company policy prohibits the Amex card from being used on “digital adult content websites”.

Canada’s prime minister Justin Trudeau said his government is working with police to address issues raised by Mr Kristof.

US senator Josh Hawley promised legislation to create a federal right to sue for every person “coerced or trafficked or exploited by sites like Pornhub”.
