Jamie Carragher has declared the Premier League title race looks to be back on after Manchester City’s 3-2 home defeat against Tottenham.
Spurs snatched an unlikely three points at the Etihad Stadium in a dramatic encounter on Saturday evening as Harry Kane struck deep into stoppage time just minutes after Riyad Mahrez looked to have rescued a draw for City.
The loss was only City’s third in the league this season, and their first in 16 games dating back to late October.
City had an 11-point league lead over Liverpool as recently as mid-January, but that gap has now slimmed down dramatically.
Trailing Pep Guardiola’s side by six points, Liverpool have a game in hand, and a trip to the Etihad still to come.
A 3-1 Liverpool win over Norwich earlier in the day kept the league leaders honest, and though Anfield stalwart Carragher still has City as the favourites – he is believes it’s game on in the fight to be champions.
“I’d still favour Man City, they’ve got Liverpool to come to the Etihad and I think Liverpool’s fixtures may be a little bit tougher off the top of my head,” the Sky Sports pundit said.
“But certainly for Liverpool in the next five days it now feels like that league game against Leeds is maybe more important than the cup final on Sunday against Chelsea.
“I think there was a little bit of hope that Liverpool maybe could do something, and there was maybe a glimmer of hope when Man City dropped points at Southampton.
“That was the first time in such a long time that they hadn’t dropped anything at all and you very rarely see a Pep Guardiola team get pegged back so I’d still say they’re in the hot seat.
“It’s still a big thing for any team – I know Tottenham have done it today – but even a team of Liverpool’s quality to come here and win will not be easy.
“But I think the great thing, not just for Liverpool supporters, it is for the country, that it looks like we could have a title race and I think maybe four to six weeks ago we felt that probably that wasn’t going to be the case.”
City boss Guardiola was similarly asked about the title race reopening, and mentioned how hard it is to win the top flight in England.
“I didn’t need to lose a game today to know it [how hard it is to win the league],” he said.
“There are many, many games to play and people are going to drop points.
“We are now going to enjoy the Champions League at home and train to prepare for the next games.”
