Galatasaray goalkeeper Fernando Muslera added an unlikely cherry on top as they became Turkish champions for a 25th time.

Muslera completed Galatsaray’s 3-0 rout over Kayserispor with a penalty in the 89th minute.

The 38-year-old squeezed his spot kick attempt underneath opposite number Bilal Bayazit, who guessed the direction correctly and dived to his left but could not keep the ball out.

Muslera, who is expected to depart the club after 14 years when his contract expires at the end of the season, appeared to apologise to Bayazit before he was mobbed by his teammates.

It was the second goal of the Uruguayan’s professional career, with the other coming in the 2011/12 season.

But, most crucially, it sealed the three points that put Galatasaray eight points clear of Jose Mourinho‘s Fenerbahce with two games remaining.

Victor Osimhen had Galatasaray on their way to the league title when he opened the scoring in the 26th minute.

The Nigerian, on loan from Napoli, rose highest to flick home Gabriel Sara’s corner in the 26th minute.

It was Osimhen’s 25th league goal in 29 games for Galatasaray.

Osimhen’s goal was made all the sweeter by the fact his daughter, Hailey, got to announce his name to the crowd and have them chant in unison.

Baris Alper Yilmaz doubled Galatasaray’s advantage just three minutes later.

The Turkish forward received a pass from Lucas Torreira and found himself in acres of space.

He took his time before he swept home past Bayazit with a first-time effort to kickstart the title party.

Muslera then got in on the act to seal Galatasaray’s third-straight Turkish Super Lig crown.

Unfortunately for Mourinho, Galatsaray’s triumph means his wait for a league title has now stretched to a decade.

The Portuguese manager’s last league title came in the 2014/15 campaign when he steered Chelsea to the Premier League crown in his second stint at the club.

In the decade preceding that final victory at Stamford Bridge, Mourinho won five league title across spells at Inter Milan, Real Madrid and also during his first stint with Chelsea.

Long regarded as a serial winner, Mourinho’s last trophy was the Europa Conference League which he won with Roma in the 2021/22 season.

Mourinho arrived at Fenerbahce in June and signed a two-year contract, meaning he has one more season left in Istanbul.

Speaking last October, the 62-year-old confirmed he would like a return to England, where he has already managed Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham.

“Best thing I can do is go to a team who does not play in UEFA competitions,” Mourinho said following Fenerbache’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United in the Europa League.

“So a club at the bottom in England who needs a coach in two years, I am ready to go. I don’t want to speak any more about it.”
