Chelsea have suffered more pain in their bid to sign Wesley Fofana from Leicester with the Foxes rejecting a third bid.
It is widely reported the Blues’ most recent offer for the 21-year-old defender was worth around £70million, but Leicester still refuse to sell.
Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers confirmed a bid from the Blues was rejected, however, he didn’t specify what Chelsea offered for Fofana.
Rodgers said after Leicester’s Carabao Cup win over Stockport County: “The club told me this [Tuesday] afternoon. I don’t know too much detail around it because I’ve been concentrating on the game.
“I believe there was another bid and that it was rejected, but nothing more I can tell you on that.”
Fofana has made it clear he wants the move to Stamford Bridge and the Frenchman was left out of the Foxes squad in their 2-1 defeat at home to Southampton on Saturday.
Despite their latest setback, Chelsea remain hopeful of landing Fofana before the transfer window slams shut on September 1.
It is understood their third bid contained a number of difficult add-ons and Leicester want a fee closer to £80m.
Rodgers has previously admitted it has been a ‘trying’ time for Fofana, having held talks with the centre-back after he missed a training session last week.
However, Liverpool legend Graeme Souness was not so diplomatic when discussing the situation on talkSPORT.
He said: “Call it what it is. He’s refusing to play and wants to move. You sign the contract.
“Whatever way you say it, he’s saying, ‘My mind is not in the right place’. That to me is, ‘I’m not ready to play’.
“Rodgers is going out of his way to defend the player who doesn’t want to join the fight.”
Souness added: “I’d fall out with him. That’s possibly the wrong thing to do. At the end of the day, Brendan is walking a tightrope.
“People will be looking at him now. They’ve not had a good time, they are sitting near the bottom of the league and that’s the thing he has to deal with.
“He should be focusing on trying to win the next football match.
“That is modern management. He’s having to bend over and defend a boy who has done nothing in the game.
“Maybe he will be a top player one day, but he’s had to bend over to say, ‘Please play for me’.
“That’s how mad and out of sync football has become for me where the tail now wags the dog.
“These players sign big contracts, get paid absolute fortunes and can pick and choose when they want to play.”
