Mikel Arteta has played down Arsenal’s chances of winning the Premier League despite extending their lead over Manchester City.

The Gunners go into Christmas sitting at the top of the Premier League table – five points clear of the Citizens after beating Wolves 2-0 at Molineux.

Martin Odegaard scored twice in the second half against the Midlands outfit as Arsenal capitalised on City’s shock 2-1 defeat to Brentford.

But despite picking up their 12th top-flight win of the campaign, Arteta is keeping level-headed in Arsenal’s quest for a first league title since 2004.

He told Sky Sports: “Our focus is to be better everyday and we still have things to improve.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve been in this position.

“It’s a full transformation from the fans energy and passion that they’ve transmitted to these players.

“The unity from the top to every single member of the team and the staff, they [the fans] are the soul of this football club.”

Arteta also confirmed that Granit Xhaka was brought off early against Wolves as he was suffering from sickness.

And the Spanish gaffer commented on how he is gutted Gabriel Jesus yet again failed to score, with it now 11 games without a goal for the Brazilian.

Jesus had a goal ruled out for offside, while he hit the bar and volleyed wide from close range as he once again left his shooting boots at home.

Arteta remarked: “We’re feeling it for him because his work is invaluable. But this is where we are.

“The love that his teammates and coaching staff have for him speaks for itself and hopefully he feels that.”

Match-winner Odegaard echoed similar words as Arteta as he insisted Arsenal have to remain calm and take things one step at a time.

He stated: “We had to dig deep today. The first half was difficult, they defended well.

“We were a bit slow but we know the quality we have and we always create chances. We stayed patient and it paid off.

“We talked about some tactical things at half-time and did better in the second half.

“We played the ball out wide and created some overload and got the goal which helps.

“We have to stay calm, it’s a long way to the end of the season, we play every game as a final and that’s all.”

Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale added: “Every win is very big for us – away from home and at home. This place is tough to come and they showed that for 45 minutes.

“Massive win going into break and a bit of a bumper but that means nothing really. Things will change over the break and we have to come back how we finished it.”
