Pires: Bergy & ZZ better than Thierry
Arsenal legend Robert Pires has named the two best players he ever played with – and neither of them are Thierry Henry.
Pires lined-up with Gunners’ all-time top-scorer Henry in their famous ‘Invincibles’ side, and won the World Cup and Euros with him for France.
But when asked by L’Equipe to name the best he lined up with, Pires picked two different modern-day greats.
The Frenchman went for Arsenal and Netherlands play-maker Dennis Bergkamp, and his former international team-mate Zinedine Zidane.
Pires, 48, said: “With both, I have improved enormously.
“It is not enough to copy them, it is impossible – but to observe, to learn.
“When I arrived in 2000 (at Arsenal), Dennis said to me, ‘The most important thing is the first control.
“He said, ‘it puts you in a good mood, but if you miss it, you will be disturbed’.
“He didn’t talk much. Zizou either. Both were class.”
Playing alongside Bergkamp and Henry, Pires helped Arsenal win two Premier League titles and two FA Cups.
